Commonly referred to as a certificate of deposit (CD) account, a TD is a savings vehicle that typically allows you to earn interest on your money faster, or at a greater rate, than a standard savings account. TDs have a fixed term and a fixed interest rate, so they’re a low-risk way to grow your savings within a certain amount of time.
However, these interest rate advantages come with a stipulation: TDs lock your money in for a specific time period (term), which can range from one month to five years (and beyond). If you need access to your funds before the term ends/matures, there may be a fee or penalty for early withdrawal. A TD’s term is dependent on both the institution offering the account, and the interest rate you prefer, with longer terms sometimes offering the most attractive interest rates.
A money market account is a unique deposit account that allows you to save money at a competitive interest rate with multiple ways to access your funds. These accounts typically require a higher opening deposit and minimum balance than a time deposit (TD) or CD, or traditional savings accounts, but, in return, they can provide more payback through higher interest rates.
Most money market accounts offer beneficial features such as interest paid on tiered balances, debit card access and check-writing capability, unlimited deposits, and flexibility for savings and purchases. Before setting up your account, it's important to understand potential drawbacks, such as withdrawal and transfer limitations or lower interest rates when compared to other types of savings accounts. And, in some cases, if you can’t meet the minimum balance required for these accounts, you may have to pay a monthly fee. If you are concerned about any of these account features, speak with your financial professional and they can walk you through the benefits.
Yes, UMB TDs and money market accounts are FDIC insured; however, customers should determine their coverage calculation. For more information on FDIC insurance and to calculate ways to maximize your coverage per insured institution visit edie.fdic.gov.
As you choose between a TD, also known as a CD, and a money market account, it’s a good idea to consider your specific financial goal and which account type can best help you achieve it. If you want to set aside your money without access for a time to allow your investment to grow, a TD may be a better choice. But if you’d like to have immediate access to your savings while also earning interest on the balance, then a money market account may be right for you.
Either way, work with your financial professional to decide the best account type for your needs. You can even use both TD and money market accounts to maximize your savings potential.
